One of the most important aspects of home security, which is all too often neglected, is the type of locks that you have in your home. Windows Crime statistics show that a large proportion of burglars will enter a property via the window. Secure window locks are the best way to discourage thieves, but often, windows either have easily broken locks, or no locks at all. If you have small children, then it is always best to have secure locks on windows, especially top floor windows. The police advise that you should have strong window locks if you want to keep out intruders. Opportunist thieves can be put off by a door that is securely locked, but may see a window as an easy option. Secure Locks Having secure locks fitted to your front and back doors is one of the best ways of deterring an opportunistic housebreaker. Many householders don’t know that some of the easiest locks to get past are those using ‘standard’ cylinder locks. Older cylinders were not subjected to some of the stringent testing that is in place today, and as such could be easily broken. The latest locks are much more robust, with a stronger mechanism making them much harder to break than the alternatives. It’s always a good idea to look out for the British Standard Kitemark when cylinders are replaced. This mark ensures that appropriate testing has been done, and the more stars, the greater the security. The best door locks may not be the cheapest, but they will give you much greater peace of mind when you’re away from home. Security Checks It is worth taking advantage of free home security checks; at the very least, it will show you which parts of your home are the most vulnerable to housebreakers. You should always make sure that doors and windows are locked before you go to bed at night. You’d be surprised at the number of burglaries that take place while the homeowners are asleep, and only discover they have been burgled when they get up the next morning. If you can afford it, update all aspects of your home security.
